When preparing yourself for any kind of cosmetic procedures, it’s completely normal to be feeling nervous and apprehensive about the treatments ahead. When preparing for a medical procedure such as a chemical peel, it is important to know what will likely happen before, during and after the procedure.
Chemical peels are used to help reduce wrinkles and other skin imperfections. In short chemical peels remove the layers of skin that are damaged so that new layers of skin can start to grow. These new layers will be smoother and they will look a lot fresher than the layers that have previously been removed by the chemical peel.
There are three types of chemical peels these are determined by the deepness of the peel. These are superficial, medium and deep.
Superficial peels usually consist of a liquid or paste that is applied directly to the face using a brush or other specialised applicator. After an advised amount of time, the chemical is then removed. Superficial peels generally create very little down time, and you can resume your life normally from the same day. The skin may turn pink for a couple of days after this procedure and the patient will generally see one round of peeling.
Medium Depth Peels
Medium depth peels are used in pretty much the same way as a superficial peel is used. The only major difference is that the chemical is left on the skin for a longer amount of time in order to create the best results possible. Once again there is little to no down time associated with this chemical peel. This type of peel can generally be done every six to eight months so that an optimum level of skin freshness can be kept.
Deep peels will be performed under a general anaesthetic and can also take a considerable amount of time to recover from, and should only be taken in extreme cases where they are the only option available to you.
